8 full days as father and son. First the wild side, with safaris, elephants and the Panorama Route around Hoedspruit. Then Cape Town, from Table Mountain down to the penguins of Boulders Beach.
| Day | Where | What we did |
|---|---|---|
| Day0 | Departure | Evening flight. |
| Day1 | Hoedspruit | Arrival in the afternoon and check in at Lindiwe Safari Lodge, then an hour on electric scooters through the Hoedspruit Wildlife Estate. |
| Day2 | Hoedspruit | A 5am start for our morning safari in the Pridelands private game reserve. In the afternoon, we met Jessica the Hippo before a quad ride with African Dream Tour. |
| Day3 | Hoedspruit | Early morning at Elephant Moments, a short drive from the main gate of Kapama Private Reserve. Evening safari as the sun goes down over the bush. |
| Day4 | Panorama Route | A full day on the Panorama Route, home to God's Window, Bourke's Luck Potholes and the Three Rondavels. We ended the day with a boat ride on the Blyde River Canyon. |
| Day5 | Cape Town | Flight from Hoedspruit to Cape Town and a first evening downtown. |
| Day6 | Cape Town | Up Table Mountain by cable car in the morning, then Bo-Kaap's colourful houses, its museum and Nathan Chikoto's gallery of art made from recycled materials. |
| Day7 | Cape Peninsula | Leaving downtown for Noordhoek along the coast: a swim at Camps Bay, the breathtaking Chapman's Peak Drive and Noordhoek Long Beach. The wedding that brought us here took place at Noordhoek Winery, a gorgeous venue. |
| Day8 | Departure | Early morning at Boulders Beach, almost alone with the penguins. Then the V&A Waterfront and its aquarium, lunch at the Time Out Market and a 4pm flight home. |

We really loved our stay here. A lovely lodge, warm and attentive service, and a team that organised all our safaris for us.
Book on Agoda→A studio in the One Thibault building, right in the centre. Ideal for a night in town before heading up Table Mountain.
Book on Agoda→We paid 69€ for two nights, an absolute bargain, and Noordhoek turned out to be a great base to explore the peninsula.
Book on Booking→Prices reflect what we paid in late November. Always check current rates before booking.
We rented a car with Avis in Hoedspruit, then again in Cape Town. The roads are in good condition and driving was pretty easy, even for a first time on the left.
What made the trip easy with a kid, and what we would tell a friend before they go.
South Africa is on a time zone very close to Europe. A real advantage when travelling with kids.
If your kid is young, book half-day safaris rather than full days. You still get both the morning and the evening game drives, on the same day or on different days.
Our lodge booked our drives with The Other Animals Safaris. With a guide, you can fully enjoy the bush instead of focusing on the road.
The guides were kind and informative, and they made the experience unforgettable. We highly recommend it.
Table Mountain and Boulders Beach are best first thing in the morning, before the crowds. Up on the mountain, the clouds can clear quickly.
Avoid walking around downtown Cape Town after dark, even though we personally never had an issue.
Food was amazing and affordable everywhere we went. Here are the places we would happily go back to.
It was our first safari, and nothing quite prepares you for it. The alarm rings before dawn, the open jeep rolls into the bush, and suddenly there are elephants, rhinos and zebras all around you. Seeing those moments through my son's eyes was worth the whole trip on its own.
Then came Cape Town, and we simply fell for it. Few cities have a setting like this one: Table Mountain, one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, rising right behind the centre, the colourful streets of Bo-Kaap, wild beaches, and a coastline that only gets better as you drive down the peninsula towards the penguins of Boulders Beach.
South Africa is called the Rainbow Nation for a reason. That mix of cultures shows up everywhere, from the people you meet to the food on your plate, and it all comes at prices that still feel fair, with barely any time difference from Europe. We left already talking about coming back.
Until next time, stay adventurous.
